The 2011 KCSE results had an underdog school top the charts as Maranda rose to claim the first position. Here’s an analysis of the facts and figures pertaining the 2011 KCSE results.

Maranda High School obtained a mean grade of A-, with a performance index of 11.2872. Alliance High School and Alliance Girls had performance indexes of 11.1455 and 11.0822 respectively. Seven schools in the top 20 list where upgraded to national schools. They included: Maranda (1), Pangani Girls (9), Friends School Kamusinga (12), Kapsabet Boys (15), Karima Girls (16), and Moi High Mbiruri (18). Read/Download a copy of the top 100 national schools and the upgraded ones. 16 subjects had increased performance as compared to 13 in the KCSE 2010 results. These subjects included Mathematics, Physics, Biology and Kiswahili (compulsory) and 12 other electives. KCSE 2011 – Gender
While 23,224 more girls sat for the 2011 exams, as compared to KCSE 2010, the numbers still favored the boys where they outnumbered the girls by 46,927. Kirinyaga was the only county, out of the 47 counties that had a higher number of girls sit for the exams. Mandera county, on the other hand had the worst boy-girl ratio. Only 27.3 per cent of the candidates in North Eastern were girls.
The number of cheating cases increased significantly to 2,927, from 534 in the 2010 KCSE. These 2927 candidates from 154 schools, had their results cancelled. Only 11 out of the 47 counties did not report any cases of cheating; Turkana, Nyeri, Laikipia, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Nyandarua, Machakos, West Pokot, Nyamira and Trans-Nzoia. While Garissa had the highest number of schools (18) with cheating cases. It was followed by Nairobi (15), Mandera (14) and Mombasa (8), Wajir (8), Kisii (7), Migori (6), Makueni (6), Bungoma (5) and Homa Bay counties (5). 411,783 candidates, in 6,448 centers, sat for the 2011 KCSE exams, compared to 357,488 in 2010.1,930 candidates scored grade A as compared to 1,566, last year.
